Abstract

This article addresses popular graphic imagery and hand-painted lettering as forms of visual expression rooted in craftsmanship and used for advertising in a neighborhood context in Medellín. These practices are at risk of disappearing due to an increasing digitization of POS advertising, which offers greater speed and availability. This research aims to review existing examples and place them in dialogue with the city's visual history to preserve the memory of these expressions as part of the cultural identity of the city center and the north of the city. Faced with a lack of awareness and devaluation of local popular graphic art, this study aims to position it at the center of a discussion that allows it to be seen as a symbol constructed from the particularities of the social fabric. A qualitative methodology with a historical-hermeneutical approach was used, integrating ethnographic and phenomenological strategies, along with tools such as mapping, observations, recording, taking field notes, and conducting interviews. The review of photographic archives and dialogue with graphic artists and sign painters allowed for an understanding of the current state of these practices, the impact of technology on their sustainability, and insufficient generational succession associated with a lack of technical knowledge and their devaluation in  advertising and graphic design. The main finding highlights the value of vernacular imagery  in popular imagination and the cultural identity of Medellín. The photographic archive constructed articulates semiotic aspects of iconicity and symbolism, revealing an essential dimension of collective memory and allowing for the tracing of styles and visual languages specific to different areas. Hence, this rediscovery contributes to the understanding of a little-explored aesthetic and suggests that its study should be expanded to other urban contexts.
