Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • If there are multiple authors, each author must be duly registered on the platform with their title, research group, and institution name. The registered email address on the platform must be institutional and each registered author must include its ORCID ID.
  • The title of the article on the first page must have a footer indicating whether the article is derived from completed or ongoing research, a review, or a reflection. If applicable, the funding sources for this research must be included.
  • The article's text must be double-spaced with a font size of 12 points. Italics should be used instead of underlining (except for URLs). The article's length must not exceed 5,000 words for articles derived from research and up to 6,000 words for review articles (excluding titles, abstracts, keywords, and references).
  • Web addresses should be added to the bibliographical references whenever possible. Each of the cited articles must include its respective DOI (clickable) in the list of references where available.
  • The authors may suggest at least three (3) peer reviewers, two of whom must be from a different country. Suggested peers should be suitable academics and must have at least one publication in indexed journals during the last two years before the submission date.
  • The authors accept and declare that the article submitted:
    - It is unpublished
    - It is of their authorship and they are responsible for its content.
    -That the data and information contained in the article are true.
    - That all authors agree with the content and final form of delivery of the article for submission to Revista Universidad de Ingenierías Medellín.
    - The contents of the article are not in conflict of interest with the institutions to which the authors belong, nor with the institutions that finance the research, or with others with which they may be related.
    - It has not been and will not be presented in another journal for publication purposes while the process with Revista Universidad de Ingenierías Medellín is in force.
    - Authorize Revista Universidad de Ingenierías Medellín, once the article has been accepted for publication, to make free use of the entire content of the article so that it may be published in any printed or electronic media.

Author Guidelines

Everyone submitting articles to any journal of the University of Medellin accepts with their submissions that the article is unpublished, of its authorship and that the manuscript has not been submitted to other journals simultaneously. Furthermore, with the approval of the article, the economic rights of the article are transferred to the institution and the institution is authorized to broadcast these texts by any media, whether print or online, including the internet.

Revista Ingenierías Universidad de Medellín is a high-quality scientific publication derived from research in the engineering field. The journal will prioritize the three first following article typologies and will assess the convenience of accepting articles not derived from research according to their relevance and quality.

  1. Research article. A document that presents, in a detailed manner, the original results of finished research projects. The structure usually contains five important parts: an introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions.
  2. Review article. A document that results from finished research, in which the results of published research are analyzed, systematized and integrated on a science or technology field to give an account of the advancements and development trends. They are characterized by a careful bibliographical revision of at least 50 references.
  3. Article derived from a conference. These are results from ongoing or finished research projects in which original and relevant contributions to science or a field are made and need to be promptly published. They are made from lectures given at scientific events of academic quality.
  4. Article not derived from research. A document that presents original points of view that arise from a revision of the topic, the reflection on a particular problem, from the interest for opening a debate or from the continuous analysis of an interesting problem for science across time and for which high-quality sources are consulted. Those interested in submitting their manuscripts for publication in our journal must comply with the following requirements. Those articles that do not meet the topic or style requirements of the journal will be rejected before evaluation.

  • For facilitating the evaluation process, the journal prefers the reception of articles in English. Nevertheless, they can be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Those articles approved for publication must be submitted by the authors in their final version in a high-quality English language. Not submitting the article in English will be a cause for rejection. The journal does not accept already published articles or in the process of publication in other journals.
  • The article must be submitted through the online system at Envíos.
  • For any doubt regarding the use of the platform, authors can write to or for assistance.
  • The article must be submitted in MS Office Word® format, letter sized (215 x 280 mm u 8.5 x 11 inches), doubled space, single column and with 2.5 mm margins in the four sides, in Arial font with 12 points and with a maximum extension of 5000 words for research articles and up to 6000 words for review articles, including the title, the abstract and the keywords. Longer articles will not be accepted. All the pages must be numbered consecutively in the top right corner.
  • In the submission of the article through the platform, the authors must suggest at least three peer-evaluators, two of them from countries different than the author’s country of origin. The evaluators must be academics of a solid trajectory and they must have at least one publication in an indexed journal in the last two years before the submission of the article. For making these suggestions, the authors must indicate them in the "Comentarios del autor/a" (comments of the author) section located in the submissions platform. The journal reserves its right of taking those evaluators into account.
  • Except for the review articles, which must have at least 50 references, the rest of the articles must have at least 15 references.
  • Regarding original articles and conferences, at least 30 % of the citations must be recent (last 5 years).
  • The references related to monographs or final degree works must represent a maximum of 15 % of the total number of references.


The article must be structured according to this sequence of parts:

  1. The first page must begin with the centered title. Given that the submission is made through the OJS platform, the anonymity must be guaranteed for the blind double peer review. For that reason, the submitted article must not mention the names of the authors. Nonetheless, in the registration of each author in the platform, these must be identified with their respective academic titles or positions that indicate their authority on the field, their physical address, their phone numbers, their institution emails and their fax numbers. Personal email addresses must not be used. It is mandatory to include the RCID code of each author.
  2. In a footnote associated with the title, there must be specified whether the article comes from an ongoing, finished or review research, from a conference or if it is not derived from research. The title of the research must be indicated, as well as its execution time and financing entities.
  3. The abstract will be of 300 words maximum and must be attached with 10 keywords at its end. The keywords should be extracted from a thesaurus to allow their international homologation.
  4. The following pages must have, in this order, an introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions, acknowledgements and references. These titles must be in capital letters. The numbering of the sections must begin in the material and methods section with the number 1 in Arabic numerals. Introduction and references are not numbered.

Tables, figures and equations

  • The tables, equations and figures must be cited within the text; number them in the order of their appearance, avoid redundancies between tables, figures and text. The naming of each table must be in the top; the source and the symbols must appear at the foot of the table.
  • Equations must be numbered in Arabic numerals between parentheses at the right margin of each one of them. The equations must be written in the MS Word® equation editor and not inserted as images in the text. The equations must be mentioned in the body of text and structures such as "as shown in the following equation" must be avoided. Each one of the terms of the equations must be named and described after the equation.
  • All the illustrations, including pictures, diagrams, maps and graphics must be at least 300 dpi in resolution. Figures must have high quality and resolution so that they remain legible when processes for publication. Pictures must be of excellent quality. A number and a legend must be present in the lower part of each figure and referenced in an adequate place of the text. In case the figure is an elaboration of the authors, it must be stated like this: Source: own elaboration. The legend of each picture or table must be eloquent enough so that they can be read independently from the rest of the text. Figures, as far as possible, must be in an editable format that allows, for example, adjusting their size or font.
  • Images inserted as tables are not accepted. These must be built using MS Office Word® or MS Office Excel®.

Abbreviations and style

  • The use of footnotes in the text is not allowed, except those that indicated the institutional affiliation of the article and the financing sources.
  • The metric system and all of its abbreviations must be used for all the measurements as well as decimals instead of fractions (0,6 for example), except in equations.
  • Do not include a page or section break.
  • If you wish to highlight words or phrases in the text, avoid the use of bolds and use italics instead.


When citing references within the text, the style guideline of the IEE must be employed as in the Mendeley® software. The inclusion of DOI indicators is mandatory whenever present. Please commit to standard use and consult any doubts with the journal.

Given that the journal is an arbitrated one, each work is reviewed by a designated editor who decides if the article is rejected or if it is directed towards peer review. After the peer review and based on that specialized concept, the editor in charge requests adjustments to the authors. At this stage, the article might be rejected if the authors exceed the answer time appointed by the editor. Once the article is successfully adjusted, the editor in charge approves the articles for its publication. The general editor is responsible for deciding on which issue the article should be published in.

An additional cause for rejection occurs if during the style correction stage, after the evaluation and authors correction, relevant problems of syntax, coherence, originality, redaction or organization are found and that result in an illegible text that difficults the communication process of the article or if the article is found to be completely or partially published in other media or journal.

The names and e-mail addresses entered in this magazine will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this magazine and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other person.

Total or partial reproduction of the contents of the journal are authorized for educational, investigative or academic purposes as long as the source is cited. In order to make reproductions for other purposes, it is necessary to have the express authorization of the imprint or Sello Editorial of the Universidad de Medellín.
