Media Coverage of Artificial Intelligence: A Look at the Brazilian Landscape

Abstract

This study analyzes Brazilian media coverage of the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). Based on an analysis of 104 news articles published in two of the country’s leading newspapers, it was possible to understand the discursive construction that took place. In general, coverage by O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo proved to be superficial, with little diversity of opinion and minimal encouragement of debate. It is concluded that coverage of AI in the major Brazilian press limits readers’ understanding of the complex implications of this technology, perpetuating a simplistic and uncritical view of its impacts. Furthermore, this coverage restricts public debate on the ethical challenges and social responsibilities that accompany the development and application of AI, especially in sensitive areas such as health, justice, and security. Given this scenario, it is crucial to conduct broader and more in-depth studies on the role of communication and journalism in the public discussion of these technologies, considering their social, ethical, and political impacts. Only through a comprehensive and contextualized analysis of the technology can journalism fulfill its role of informing, educating, and empowering citizens to actively participate in public debates about the future of AI and its impacts on society.
