Anyone submitting an article to any journal at the University of Medellin is agreeing that the article is unpublished, is their own original work, and has not been submitted simultaneously to other journals. Additionally, upon approval of the article, economic rights are transferred to the institution, and the institution is authorized to distribute the article by any media, whether in print or online, including the Internet.

Revista Ingenierías Universidad de Medellín is a high-quality scientific publication that publishes articles based on engineering research. The journal will prioritize the following three types of articles and will consider accepting non-research-based articles based on their relevance and quality.

 

  1. Research article: A document that presents the original results of completed research projects in detail. The structure typically includes five important sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusions.
  2. Review article: A document resulting from completed research in which published research results are analyzed, systematized, and integrated in a science or technology field to provide an overview of advances and development trends. They are characterized by a thorough bibliographic review of at least 50 references.
  3. Conference proceedings article: Results from ongoing or completed research projects that make original and relevant contributions to science or a field and require prompt publication. These are based on presentations given at high-quality academic scientific events.
  4. Opinion article: A document that presents original points of view that arise from a revision of the topic, reflection on a specific problem, interest in opening a debate, or ongoing analysis of an interesting problem in science over time, and that draws from high-quality sources. Those interested in submitting their manuscripts for publication in our journal must comply with the following requirements. Articles that do not meet the topic or style requirements of the journal will be rejected before evaluation.

To facilitate the evaluation process, the journal prefers to receive articles in English, although they may also be submitted in Spanish or Portuguese. However, articles approved for publication must be submitted by the authors in their final version in high-quality English. Failure to submit the article in English will result in its rejection. The journal does not accept articles that have already been published or are in the process of being published in other journals.

The article must be submitted through the online system at Envíos. The authors can write to revistaingenierias@udem.edu.co or asist_ingenierias@udemedellin.edu.co for assistance with any questions regarding the use of the platform.

The article must be submitted in MS Office Word® format, letter-sized (215 x 280 mm or 8.5 x 11 inches), double-spaced, single column, and with 2.5 mm margins on all sides, in Arial font with 12 points. The maximum length for research articles is 5000 words and for review articles, it is 6000 words, including the title, abstract, and keywords. Longer articles will not be accepted. All the pages must be numbered consecutively in the top-right corner.

When submitting an article through the platform, the authors must suggest at least three peer reviewers, two of whom should be from countries other than the author's country of origin. The reviewers must be academics with a solid background and must have at least one publication in an indexed journal in the two years prior to submission of the article. The authors must indicate the suggested reviewers in the "Comentarios del autor/a" (author's comments) section located in the submission platform. The journal reserves the right to consider these reviewers.

Except for review articles, which must have at least 50 references, all other articles must have at least 15 references. For original articles and conference proceedings, at least 30% of the citations must be from the last five years. References related to monographs or final degree work must represent a maximum of 15% of the total number of references.

 

Structure

The article must be structured according to the following sequence:

 

  1. The first page begins with a centered title. As the submission is made through the OJS platform, anonymity must be guaranteed for a blind double-peer review. Therefore, the submitted article does not mention the names of authors. However, each author must be identified by their respective academic titles or positions indicating their authority in the field, physical address, phone number, institution email, and fax number during registration on the platform. Personal e-mail addresses should not be used. It is mandatory to include the ORCID ID of each author.
  2. In a footnote associated with the title, it should be specified whether the article is derived from ongoing, finished, or review research, a conference, or not derived from research. The title of the research, its execution time, and the financing entities must be indicated.
  3. The abstract should be a maximum of 300 words, followed by 10 keywords. Keywords should be extracted from a thesaurus to allow for their international homologation.
  4. The following pages must have the following sections in this order: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, and References. These titles should be written in capital letters. The numbering of the sections should begin with the Materials and Methods section (number 1 in Arabic numerals). The introduction and references should not be numbered.

Tables, figures and equations

  • Tables, equations, and figures must be cited in the text and numbered in the order of their appearance. Avoid redundancies between tables, figures, and text. Each table must have a title at the top, and the sources and symbols must appear at the bottom.
  • Equations must be numbered in Arabic numerals and enclosed in parentheses aligned with the right margin of the page. The equations should be written using the MS Word® equation editor and not inserted as images. Each term in the equation must be named and described after the equation.
  • All illustrations, including pictures, diagrams, maps, and graphs, must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. The figures should be of high quality and resolution to ensure legibility during publication. Pictures or images must be of excellent quality. Each figure must have a number and legend at the bottom, and they should be referenced appropriately in the text. If the figure is an original creation, it must be stated as "Source: own elaboration." The legend of each picture or table must be sufficiently comprehensive to be understood independently from the rest of the text. Figures should be in an editable format that allows for adjustments such as resizing or changing fonts.
  • The images inserted in the tables have not been accepted. Tables must be created using MS Office Word® or MS Office Excel®.

Abbreviations and Style

  • Footnotes should not be used in the text except for institutional affiliations and funding sources.
  • The metric system and its abbreviations should be used for all measurements and decimals should be used instead of fractions (for example, 0.6), except in the equations.
  • Do not use page or section breaks.
  • Use italics instead of bolds to highlight words or phrases in the text.

 

References

When citing references in the text, follow the style guidelines of the IEEE, as in Mendeley® software. DOI indicators must be included whenever possible. Please follow standard usage and consult the journal if you have any doubts.

As the journal is peer-reviewed, each article is evaluated by an assigned editor who decides whether to reject the article or proceed with the peer review. After peer review, the editor may request revisions from the authors based on feedback from reviewers. If the authors exceed the given time frame for revisions, the article may be rejected. Once the revisions are successfully completed, the editor approves the article for publication. The general editor is responsible for deciding which issues the article will be published.

An article may be rejected during the style correction stage if relevant problems of syntax, coherence, originality, redaction, or organization are found, resulting in an illegible text that hinders the communication process of the article, or if the article is found to be completely or partially published in other media or journal.
