Abstract

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hyphotesis explores the relation between economic growth
and environmental quality, trying to prove that population density, income inequality, levels of
education, technologycal progress and political systems, change environmental degradation procces
in the short run. Nevertheless, economic growth brings an opportunity to create sustainable urban
sites and contributes to improve environmental damage subjects in the long run.
Based on empirical studies, we explore this inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth
and environmental quality in Colombia. Finally we conclude that our country is still on the upward
slope, which means that our economic growth is inducing to worsen the environmental quality.
