Abstract

This reflection offers a review of the characteristics and main causes of the accelerated devaluation phenomenon that is affecting the Colombian economy. Based on the information of the nominal exchange rate in Colombia for the period 1991-2022 and for four other countries (Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru) for the period 1998-2022, it is evident that the devaluation suffered by these economies is a structural phenomenon (long term) and not a temporary or transitory phenomenon (short term). Despite the lack of rigorous technical exercise to try to demonstrate the causes of the phenomenon of continuous loss in the value of the local currency against the dollar over the last thirty-two years, some ideas about the main causes and possible solutions are put forward.
