DETERMINANTS OF POVERTY AND EXTREME POVERTY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD IN COLOMBIA

Abstract

This paper aims to characterize poverty and extreme monetary poverty in early childhood in Colombia, based on five dimensions of analysis: i) physical characteristics of infants; ii) family structure; iii) parental education; iv) type and infrastructure of housing; and v) food security. For this purpose, a theoretical discussion is first conducted, highlighting the importance of early childhood in human development, as well as a conceptualization of child poverty. As an empirical strategy, microdata from the Encuesta Nacional de Calidad de Vida of 2015 and 2016 are stacked, and binary response models Logit and Probit are estimated to corroborate the robustness of the results. Among other aspects, the evidence found suggests that the low socioeconomic status of families represents a risk factor for infants, through lower family investments in food security and decent housing conditions.
