How Axel Honneth's idea of social freedom can be useful for a better freedom-democracy reconciliation
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes the conception of social freedom proposed by Axel Honneth and its relationship to contemporary democracy, drawing on the hypothetico-deductive method and specialized bibliographical research in political philosophy and critical theory. It hypothesizes that this notion of social freedom, based on the principle of reciprocal recognition, constitutes a more robust normative model for supporting inclusive democratic practices than traditional conceptions of negative or reflexive freedom. Results indicate that Honneth's approach allows us to reinterpret democracy not only as an institutional arrangement but as a form of social life that promotes self-realization and a collective sense of belonging. The proposal expands the possibilities for individuals’ integration into the public sphere, demanding the strengthening of spheres of social recognition such as family, market, and political sphere. Therefore, the study concludes that Honneth's theory of social freedom contributes to a more demanding and profound understanding of democracy, linking individual freedoms and social justice from a normative perspective.
