Abstract

The article analyses honor crimes as harmful cultural practices. Their legal recognition is urgently needed in the international legal system. They are the result of a patriarchal culture, linked to the concept of honor that is embodied by women and whose preservation depends on female behaviour. In spite of the fact that they are abuses and violations of human rights, such practices find protection and justification in some legal systems provided that they are cultural. The weakness of international regulation in this area encourages the creation of a broad definition of honor crimes. Cedaw is the only universal international treaty dealing with harmful cultural practices.
