Environmental racism in Brazil and its repercussions in health: an analysis of the use caramel colour IV
Main Article Content
Abstract
It is proposed to analyze how biopolitics interferes with the fulfillment of the right to health and maximizes environmental racism in Brazil, especially with regard to the use of caramel colour IV by the food industry. The use of chemical additives in industrialized foods is a matter of discussion in health care. In the US, government agencies responsible for the health of the population, have a strict control on the use of this colorant in food due to damage that it may cause to human health. In Latin America, Brazil outstands for the excessive use of caramel colour IV, for its industries use caramel colour IV abusively in food without any concern for people’s health and fundamental rights. This denotes another form of environmental racism that Brazilian population faces, and even have consciousnesswithout even expressing concern for it. Power over the lives of people appears in its evil and harmful version. Conflicts of power, in this case, negatively interfere with citizen protection, preventing the fulfillment of the right to health and maximizing environmental racism.
